The most reliable English source for news in Honduras is Honduras This Week. The online paper can be most useful in keeping up with what is going on in Honduras while you are away. While in Honduras you can also get the English paper in print form, 51 Saturdays a year.
In each issue there is a concise review of the top news events throughout Honduras. A lot of emphasis is put on making the newspaper appeal to the international community in Honduras. In depth articles look regularly discuss tourism, culture and the environment. You can also find information on human rights and diplomatic and judicial affairs, as well as the economy and development of Honduras. Read more
There is no better way to enjoy Utila’s beautiful waterfront than from Café Mariposa. The upstairs open air seating is a great place to relax and enjoy a meal or a drink with friends.
The atmosphere is great; friendly staff mix with locals and visitors speaking a mix of English and Spanish. The place is super relaxed and casual. An inexpensive menu means you can get a full dinner plate, complete with fresh fish, rice and vegetables for between 5 and 10 dollars. Coca Cola or beer will cost you just a buck.
Café Mariposa is located near the ferry terminal in Utila; it’s two stories and bright yellow, making it quite easy to spot. Read more
When is the best time to visit Honduras? Most would say February thru June, hands down, but that answer can get a little more specific, depending on what you plan to do and exactly where you plan to visit.
If you plan on studying Spanish, try coming from September to May; schools are less crowded during this time than the standard summer months.
For those who are traveling to the North Coast and the Bay Islands area it might be best to come during the winter months, or rainy season. Why? Well, during the spring and summer humidity and temperatures are high, and rain comes pretty much without warning year round.
If you are trying to get yourself infused with the feel of life in Honduras, whether in preparation for a trip or a move, you should definitely take a dive into the sounds of Honduran music. One of the most popular and talented singers and performers in Honduras is Guillermo Anderson. He produces some amazing stuff and is worth a listen, even if you just want something new for your iPod playlist.
Villa Elena is an exclusive community resting just outside the capital city of Tegucigalpa, and it is the perfect place to settle if you are looking for something with all the beauty of Central America, but all the amenities of the first world.
Villa Elena has worked to integrate their facilities into the natural landscape of the extensive forest that surrounds their grounds. They offer a number of different model houses constructed on the grounds that are built to mimic the modern life to which most foreigners are accustomed.
The only place on Roatan that serves as a full service spa, as well as launching point for snorkeling and diving excursions is the Santé Wellness Center, Day Spa and Wellness Retreat. This is one of my favorite places to relax when in Honduras.
The Wellness Center is located on a private cay, across the way from the Parrot Tree Plantation Marina. A private boat owned and operated by the spa picks you up and whisks you across the bay, where you will be pampered like a star. It’s basically the makings of a dream vacation: massage therapy, yoga, and meditation on a private island in the Caribbean with some of the best Read more
Hondurans are some of the friendliest people on the plant, and they are always trying to help. That said, it is important to be careful when trying to find travel and other important information. Why? Simple. Hondurans do not want to disappoint.
This basically means that rather than tell you that they don’t know, a Honduran will come up with an answer that might not be correct. It is not out of mal intent; they simply want to please you by providing you with the needed response. Solution: Make sure you ask someone who is likely to know the answer – a hotel concierge, a taxi driver, or a travel agency.
Honduras is a pretty sweet place to retire, made even sweeter by the Tercera Edad (literally third age) law. This law, which can be seen in full at the Global Legal Information Network, states that residents of Honduras over the age of 65 are eligible to receive discounts on a wide variety of goods and services. The law was put into place to help seniors who are living on limited incomes make the purchases they need.
Discounts are available for medical services, including hospitalization, prescriptions, and over the counter medicine. Transportation discounts apply for air, land and sea travel. Restaurants and hotels also offer discounts, with some precursors being attached by the law. Telephone, water and Read more
On the north Caribbean coast of Honduras, the city of La Ceiba has long been a jumping point for those traveling into the exquisite Bay Islands and the adjacent Hog Islands. However, the area in and around La Ceiba has much to offer tourists, and in recent years its infrastructure has been changing to support more visiting westerners.
The Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge is a modern park that has small displays, but is really quite beautiful. Getting there is half the fun! First, you take an old train through pineapple fields to a beautiful lagoon. From there you can take a tour of the lagoon in either a motor boat or a canoe. This is a Read more
What is it exactly that is drawing more and more gringos to Honduras? It’s hard to say exactly, but this Gringo thinks it’s more than just the beautiful beaches and practically untouched natural settings. It may be the fact that Honduras is manageable; most of the highlights of the country can be seen during a two week vacation. In addition, Honduras is inexpensive. Even in touristy areas prices are far more reasonable than in other Central American countries.
Since it is not as high-profile as its neighbors, Honduras offers a charm that comes with the rawness of undiscovered terrain and untouched pueblos. Its national parks are still pure, and eco-tourism is on the rise. The parks offer Read more
