Tobacco Factory Tour in Santa Rosa de Copan

Tobacco Factory Tour in Santa Rosa de Copan

Semana Santa is coming up in April so I am making plans to travel to Santa Rosa de Copan for their week long celebration!

In the meantime, I was looking around for other things to do in Santa Rosa and have therefor been researching the area. Turns out Santa Rosa de Copan is the center of the Honduran tobacco trade and has been since colonial times.

Now, I’m not one for a smoke,  but I do enjoy history. At La Flor de Copan Cigar Factory you can take tours Monday to Friday at 10 am and at 2 pm, and it only costs about 2 dollars.

If you do enjoy cigars you’ll be happy to know at the end Read more

Coffee and Art at Ki'Bok Cafe in La Ceiba

Coffee and Art at Ki'Bok Cafe in La Ceiba

A favorite in La Ceiba and arguably the only “cool” cafe in town is Ki’Bok cafe, which according to its founder Rosalia Alcantara originally of Santa Rosa, was one of the first things she noticed La Ceiba was lacking upon moving there.

Ki’Bok, which means “aroma” in Mayan, opened four months ago and since then has drawn a crowd of regulars with its coffee and artsy feel. But, Alcantara’s dream is much larger than just your average coffee shop.

“We are trying to make this place a cultural center,” Alcantara is quoted as saying in the latest edition of HondurasThisWeek.com.

A month ago Ki’Bok cafe hosted an exhibition featuring Brazilian native Sonia Ribeiro, who is well known Read more

"Fysio Total… more than just physical therapy" in Honduras

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Honduras is not government regulated, which means it can be hard to find a true professional. The search, however, is over. Ivonne van Leest is the answer – she is a true physical therapist, having received her education in Holland.

Ivonne got her postgraduate degree in sports physical therapy: intensive therapy tailored specifically to athletes and designed to get them back to top performance level after an injury or surgery. She uses that education and training, and a total of 29 years working in therapy and rehabilitation to create new methods of treating injuries of all ages and athletic levels.

Ivonne has dubbed her new method “Fysio Total,” and it is exclusive to her clinic. In Honduras Read more

La Tigra National Park – A Honduran Cloud Forest

La Tigra National Park – A Honduran Cloud Forest

La Tigra National Park dwarfs Tegucigalpa’s United Nations Park with over 238 square kilometers of cloud forest. Central America used to boast a great number of cloud forests, but in recent years that number has been reduced greatly. Honduras still has a variety of protected areas that are rich in cloud forest vegetation. La Tigra National Park is the closest one to Tegucigalpa, being located just 11 km outside the city.

Most people arrive to La Tigra National Park by way of El Hatillo, the closest and fastest way from Tegucigalpa. Just inside the Hatillo entrance there is a small lodge called La Estancia where guests can stay the night and enjoy some amazing bird watching in the surrounding pine tree Read more

National Park in Tegucigalpa

National Park in Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa’s National Park is Parque Naciones Unidas El Picacho (United Nations Park El Picacho) , which is located on the north side of the city, about 6 km from the center of town. It is where the large statue of Christ that overlooks the city is located, and offers an excellent view of the city, in particular from the foot of the statue. The National Park is open from 8 am to 5 pm and entrance costs US $1 for adults and $0.50 for children.

Within the park there are several gardens: a Confucian garden, which was donated by the Taiwan government, a United Nations garden, and the national zoo.

The zoo is open Wed-Sun from 10 am to 3 pm (weekdays) Read more

Dancing and Drinks at Bamboo Club in Tegucigalpa

Dancing and Drinks at Bamboo Club in Tegucigalpa

For a night of partying in Tegucigalpa, Lonely Planet claims that Bamboo is the city’s most exclusive night club, and while I may not agree completely with that, it is a pretty happenin’ night scene.

At Bamboo party goers dress to impress and dance the night away on the large sunken dance floor. The crowd is a mix of locals and foreigners, with everyone just looking to have a good time. The music is great, but not a ton of variety, so if you don’t like regueton, this might not be the place for you.

Authentic Japanese Food in Honduras

Authentic Japanese Food in Honduras

I love Honduran food just as much as the next Gringo Gordo wandering the streets of Tegucigalpa, but sometimes I just need something a little different. That is when I head to Usami.

You can tell if a Japanese restaurant is good or not by the number of Japanese people actually dining inside. It is not uncommon to see a little group from the Japanese community eating at Usami regularly. I have even been told that Usami is a favorite of the Japanese Ambassador to Honduras!

Send Gifts In and To Honduras

Send Gifts In and To Honduras

Sending goods in Honduras is no easy task, especially if you have something you want to have shipped down from the United States, or any other country for that matter. Honduras.com has now set up an online store where you can purchase goods and have them delivered directly to Honduras.

To be frank, I haven’t used the service yet, although I have heard good things about it from friends who have used it to send flowers and special little meals to family members. (Like Pizza Hut Wing packs and KFC chicken meals) It may seem a little strange, but it can be a nice surprise for a special night.

Tips for Making it Work in Honduras

Tips for Making it Work in Honduras

Some Gringos can take it… others can’t, but by following a few tips to fit in and keep your sanity you increase your chances of survival in adjusting to life in Honduras.

Learn a few Spanish phrases and use them. “Hola” and “gracias” are probably two words you knew before you came here. Use them regularly and slowly incorporate other Spanish phrases into your vocabulary. (For improving your Spanish I like Madrigal’s Magic Key to Spanish)
Don’t forget where you came from. You can decide how you do this. I like to surf the internet for news from my home town and talk to family and friends. It makes you appreciate where you came from and where
