Eat Out at Playa Taty's in La Ceiba

If there is one restaurant you have to try while visiting La Ceiba it is Playa Taty’s. It has been open for going on two years now, and is open 7 days a week for dinner (not for lunch).

Playa Taty’s has everything going on that you would expect from a beach restaurant: bright colors, a palm leaf roof, a little patio thing overlooking the beach. The atmosphere is quite relaxing, which puts you in the perfect mindset to enjoy some good food!

In a country where service isn’t exactly priority on anyone’s list, Playa Taty’s does it right. I have never heard complaints of the wait or kitchen staff, which is a great sign! (Many speak English and Spanish, Read more

Coffee and Art at Ki'Bok Cafe in La Ceiba

Coffee and Art at Ki'Bok Cafe in La Ceiba

A favorite in La Ceiba and arguably the only “cool” cafe in town is Ki’Bok cafe, which according to its founder Rosalia Alcantara originally of Santa Rosa, was one of the first things she noticed La Ceiba was lacking upon moving there.

Ki’Bok, which means “aroma” in Mayan, opened four months ago and since then has drawn a crowd of regulars with its coffee and artsy feel. But, Alcantara’s dream is much larger than just your average coffee shop.

“We are trying to make this place a cultural center,” Alcantara is quoted as saying in the latest edition of HondurasThisWeek.com.

A month ago Ki’Bok cafe hosted an exhibition featuring Brazilian native Sonia Ribeiro, who is well known around Read more

Authentic Japanese Food in Honduras

Authentic Japanese Food in Honduras

I love Honduran food just as much as the next Gringo Gordo wandering the streets of Tegucigalpa, but sometimes I just need something a little different. That is when I head to Usami.

You can tell if a Japanese restaurant is good or not by the number of Japanese people actually dining inside. It is not uncommon to see a little group from the Japanese community eating at Usami regularly. I have even been told that Usami is a favorite of the Japanese Ambassador to Honduras!

Eat Out on the Water at the Hole in the Wall Restaurant

Eat Out on the Water at the Hole in the Wall Restaurant

If you’ve been doing any research at all about visiting Roatan (continuing on our Roatan excursions), then you have probably run across The Hole in the Wall restaurant in Jonesville. This infamous restaurant has been through a lot in recent years, after the original Hole in the Wall was destroyed by a fire in July of 2005.

The Hole in the Wall is open for lunch and dinner and also offers private BBQ parties for 12 people or more on any day of the week but Sunday. Sunday is when the party really gets going! Every Sunday the Hole in the Wall has an all you can eat dinner with the general fare being lobster, BBQ meat, shrimp, mashed potatoes, Read more

Dining and Exploring Mangroves off of Roatan

Dining and Exploring Mangroves off of Roatan

B.J.s Backyard bar and restaurant in Oak Ridge is one of the best places to get away from the crowds, kick back, relax and enjoy a cold beer and some of the freshest, best seafood around. This small fishing village is a great way to get a feel for what Roatan is really like.

Specialties at B.J.s Backyard include island style seafood (of course), delicious homemade French bread, and Bread Pudding with Rum sauce.

B.J.s Backyard really is amazing, overlooking Roatan’s unique Mangrove Canal. After lunch, you can walk down B.J.s Backyard dock and hire a small boat to navigate through the canal, past several lagoons, and straight to Caribe Point.

Fresh Seafood Restaurant in Tela, Honduras

If you are a fan of seafood and happen to have the opportunity to dine in Tela, Honduras, you have got to stop by Restaurante Lucas del Norte. Seafood is their specialty, and it is always served fresh!

The relaxed atmosphere lends itself to a pleasant dining experience. Since the seafood is really what you come here for, I suggest the seafood soup (it’s piled high with fresh seafood!) If you aren’t a fan of fish, I’ve heard that everything else is quite tasty as well, although I wouldn’t be able to tell you that from my own personal experience. Meals are less expensive than average, at less than US $10 for the food and drink.

Great Place to Eat on Utila

There is no better way to enjoy Utila’s beautiful waterfront than from Café Mariposa. The upstairs open air seating is a great place to relax and enjoy a meal or a drink with friends.

The atmosphere is great; friendly staff mix with locals and visitors speaking a mix of English and Spanish. The place is super relaxed and casual. An inexpensive menu means you can get a full dinner plate, complete with fresh fish, rice and vegetables for between 5 and 10 dollars. Coca Cola or beer will cost you just a buck.

Café Mariposa is located near the ferry terminal in Utila; it’s two stories and bright yellow, making it quite easy to spot. Read more

Exploring La Ceiba

On the north Caribbean coast of Honduras, the city of La Ceiba has long been a jumping point for those traveling into the exquisite Bay Islands and the adjacent Hog Islands. However, the area in and around La Ceiba has much to offer tourists, and in recent years its infrastructure has been changing to support more visiting westerners.

The Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge is a modern park that has small displays, but is really quite beautiful. Getting there is half the fun! First, you take an old train through pineapple fields to a beautiful lagoon. From there you can take a tour of the lagoon in either a motor boat or a canoe. This is a great Read more

A Tree House for the Big Kids

Treetanic is one of the coolest bars in all of Honduras. Located in Utila, at the Jade Seahorse Inn RESTAURANT, this elevated wooden deck sits under the shade of a large mango tree. Built to resemble an old ship, Treetanic is the ultimate tree fort for grown-ups.

The dcor is insane; the tables are made out of marbles, everything is done in bright colors, and even the bathrooms are a piece of artwork!. At the main bar you can mix and mingle while enjoying the music or you can escape down to one of the sub-levels for an intimate moment with your date. Although there is always a breeze, things can get pretty hot, so dress accordingly.

Romance Potion

The native Garifuna can be found throughout Central America, particularly on the Caribbean Coast in Honduras and neighboring countries. While some of the villages have given way to the pressures of the modern world, becoming touristier and less authentic, around Palacios you can still find typical villages where you can enjoy their traditional music, dance, and potions.

Make sure and get your hands on a bottle of Gifiti. This “medicine of love” is alcohol that has been soaked in different roots and herbs. It tastes kind of like a beefed up cough syrup, but locals will tell you it not only heals, it helps out in the romance department as well. While the Gringo isn’t Read more
