Honduras Blog Helps Readers Gain Perspective on Political Situation

For many people right now the only thing that matters in Honduras is the current political situation and what is happening between the government, the military, and the people. The problem is that the reports often depend on the perspective of the reporter, the slant of the publication, and personal opinion.

We have plenty of reports telling us what is going on in Honduras coming in from the major news sources, but what about the voices of the people in Honduras? So many of them are going unheard.

That is why since the start of the crisis in Honduras, (the coup, as mass media has called it), the blog written by La Gringa in Honduras, her Blogicito, has Read more

Political Storms and Thunder Storms

Political Storms and Thunder Storms

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if the current political situation wasn’t enough to make you second guess coming to Honduras, the weather should be. Lately, so many news reports have been full of political reports, little attention has been given to the heavy rain, flooding and mudslides that have been affecting Honduras for the last fer weeks.

Currently there are a couple of television infomercials released by the government warning citizens to steer clear of potential flooding zones, and advising waterways be kept cleared.

Ill effects have already been seen in some areas, such as El Durazno, where a hill collapsed, burying two houses and forcing families to dell for their lives.

Contrary to the popular view that has developed during the past couple of weeks, the “coup” in Honduras did not occur on Sunday, June 28, 2009, but rather on Thursday, June 25. What the world witnessed on Sunday morning Read more

Does Honduas Prefer Obama or McCain for US President?

The debate of who should be the next United States president is a hot one wherever you travel to and Honduras is no exception, even if the Gallup Poll taken doesn’t reflect it.

From May to September 2008 Gallup Polls conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States.

The poll claims that 64% of Hondurans do not know or would not answer who would make the better U.S. president as far as Honduras is concerned, Obama or McCain. Twenty-seven percent support Obama and only 9% are for McCain.

This Gringo thinks that these results don’t reflect the true feelings of Read more

Roatan Real Estate

In 2007 Roatán was named one of NuWire’s Top 5 Places to buy Caribbean Real Estate, and currently the market on the small tropical paradise is poised for a takeoff. This small island located 40 miles of the Honduras coast has been getting a lot of attention lately by divers looking for undisturbed reefs. Local laws have also been put into place to maintain the beauty of the island and its surrounding waters; last year the Honduran government invested $50 million in sanitation and sewage systems to keep the islands clean.

According to LatinFinance over 40 percent of the $450 million Honduras makes each year in tourism revenue comes from the activity on Roatán. That number Read more

President Zelaya's view of United States Involvement

Manuel may have strained relationships last month when he spoke rather strongly about the United States involvement in Central America. Zelaya feels the US is a promoter of Coup d’états, national uprisings within the region.

Zelaya has also defended Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, saying that we should respect his ideas, and allow him to express himself. Zelaya also stated that he agrees with some of what Chavez preaches.

For now, Zelaya may be throwing around some strong opinions, but he is also working hard to improve the current state of affairs for Honduran nationals.
