Pamper yourself at Sante’ Wellness Center

Pamper yourself at Sante’ Wellness Center

Roatan Island is one of Honduras hottest tourism spots. The sun, the beach, the coral reef, these aren’t the only things drawing more and more tourists to Roatan. The many tropical spas on the Island attract those who want a healthy vacation that could improve their overall wellness.

One such tropical spa is Sante’ Wellness Center. Here a wide variety of treatments are available and performed by licensed health professionals.  One of Sante’ most sought after treatments is Acupunture.  Treatments may be followed by full body massages such as a swedish massage or an aromatherapy massage, wraps (including chocolate and noni wraps), reflexology or facials. Prices range from $120 -$215 USD. Most sessions are a total of 60 minutes Read more

Honduras Blog Helps Readers Gain Perspective on Political Situation

Honduras Blog Helps Readers Gain Perspective on Political Situation

For many people right now the only thing that matters in Honduras is the current political situation and what is happening between the government, the military, and the people. The problem is that the reports often depend on the perspective of the reporter, the slant of the publication, and personal opinion.

We have plenty of reports telling us what is going on in Honduras coming in from the major news sources, but what about the voices of the people in Honduras? So many of them are going unheard.

That is why since the start of the crisis in Honduras, (the coup, as mass media has called it), the blog written by La Gringa in Honduras, her Blogicito, has Read more

Eat Out at Playa Taty's in La Ceiba

If there is one restaurant you have to try while visiting La Ceiba it is Playa Taty’s. It has been open for going on two years now, and is open 7 days a week for dinner (not for lunch).

Playa Taty’s has everything going on that you would expect from a beach restaurant: bright colors, a palm leaf roof, a little patio thing overlooking the beach. The atmosphere is quite relaxing, which puts you in the perfect mindset to enjoy some good food!

In a country where service isn’t exactly priority on anyone’s list, Playa Taty’s does it right. I have never heard complaints of the wait or kitchen staff, which is a great sign! (Many speak English and Spanish, Read more

Authentic Japanese Food in Honduras

Authentic Japanese Food in Honduras

I love Honduran food just as much as the next Gringo Gordo wandering the streets of Tegucigalpa, but sometimes I just need something a little different. That is when I head to Usami.

You can tell if a Japanese restaurant is good or not by the number of Japanese people actually dining inside. It is not uncommon to see a little group from the Japanese community eating at Usami regularly. I have even been told that Usami is a favorite of the Japanese Ambassador to Honduras!

Dining and Exploring Mangroves off of Roatan

Dining and Exploring Mangroves off of Roatan

B.J.s Backyard bar and restaurant in Oak Ridge is one of the best places to get away from the crowds, kick back, relax and enjoy a cold beer and some of the freshest, best seafood around. This small fishing village is a great way to get a feel for what Roatan is really like.

Specialties at B.J.s Backyard include island style seafood (of course), delicious homemade French bread, and Bread Pudding with Rum sauce.

B.J.s Backyard really is amazing, overlooking Roatan’s unique Mangrove Canal. After lunch, you can walk down B.J.s Backyard dock and hire a small boat to navigate through the canal, past several lagoons, and straight to Caribe Point.

There is plenty more to Read more

Dive on Roatan at Anthony Key's

I recently got a recommendation from a friend for a really great place to stay and dive on Roatan: Anthony Key’s Resort. Although is a little more expensive than average, with rooms starting at US $120 a night, it is worth the price if you are looking for a quality, hiccup free diving vacation. One of his favorite things about Anthony’s was the fact that the whole place is relaxed and quiet, and the staff has a tendency to blend into the scenery, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Anthony Key’s provides individual lockers on the dock for divers to store their own equipment, assigned a specific dive boat and a dive master, ensuring Read more

The Human Rights Project – You Can Make a Difference

The Gringo Report team was recently contacted by the Human Rights Project regarding their new mission: “To exceed the act of inspiring and successfully move people from apathy to activism.”

The Gringo Report has teamed up with the Human Rights Project in calling others to action.

To get the ball rolling, the Human Rights Project has developed a beautifully illustrated full color book entitled, The Trouble with the Alphabet, written and illustrated by Caryn West. The book takes you around the world to 26 countries A-Z where children are suffering. Each country featured is also connected to a charitable organization that receives part of the proceeds from each book purchased, as well as all purchases from TheTroubleWiththeAlphabet.com.

Fresh Seafood Restaurant in Tela, Honduras

If you are a fan of seafood and happen to have the opportunity to dine in Tela, Honduras, you have got to stop by Restaurante Lucas del Norte. Seafood is their specialty, and it is always served fresh!

The relaxed atmosphere lends itself to a pleasant dining experience. Since the seafood is really what you come here for, I suggest the seafood soup (it’s piled high with fresh seafood!) If you aren’t a fan of fish, I’ve heard that everything else is quite tasty as well, although I wouldn’t be able to tell you that from my own personal experience. Meals are less expensive than average, at less than US $10 for the food and drink.

Tostone Recipe… MmmMmm Good!

Tostones are perhaps one of the greatest appetizers in Honduras, and the hardest part about making your own is peeling the plantain! (Don’t try to peel it like a banana… take a knife and cut off both ends, then slit the peel lengthwise, dividing it into several sections, then peel off from either end, using either your fingers or the knife. Warning: It is a bit of a sticky job.)

Basic Tostone Recipe

Several green plantains (platanos)

Oil for frying

Salt

Heat the oil in a heavy skillet. In the meantime cut the peeled plantains into approx. 1 inch slices. When the oil is hot, carefully place a few of the slices into the Read more

Private island spa…. what could be better?

The only place on Roatan that serves as a full service spa, as well as launching point for snorkeling and diving excursions is the Santé Wellness Center, Day Spa and Wellness Retreat. This is one of my favorite places to relax when in Honduras.

The Wellness Center is located on a private cay, across the way from the Parrot Tree Plantation Marina. A private boat owned and operated by the spa picks you up and whisks you across the bay, where you will be pampered like a star. It’s basically the makings of a dream vacation: massage therapy, yoga, and meditation on a private island in the Caribbean with some of the best snorkeling Read more
