Eat Out at Playa Taty's in La Ceiba

If there is one restaurant you have to try while visiting La Ceiba it is Playa Taty’s. It has been open for going on two years now, and is open 7 days a week for dinner (not for lunch).

Playa Taty’s has everything going on that you would expect from a beach restaurant: bright colors, a palm leaf roof, a little patio thing overlooking the beach. The atmosphere is quite relaxing, which puts you in the perfect mindset to enjoy some good food!

In a country where service isn’t exactly priority on anyone’s list, Playa Taty’s does it right. I have never heard complaints of the wait or kitchen staff, which is a great sign! (Many speak English and Spanish, Read more

National Park in Tegucigalpa

National Park in Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa’s National Park is Parque Naciones Unidas El Picacho (United Nations Park El Picacho) , which is located on the north side of the city, about 6 km from the center of town. It is where the large statue of Christ that overlooks the city is located, and offers an excellent view of the city, in particular from the foot of the statue. The National Park is open from 8 am to 5 pm and entrance costs US $1 for adults and $0.50 for children.

Within the park there are several gardens: a Confucian garden, which was donated by the Taiwan government, a United Nations garden, and the national zoo.

The zoo is open Wed-Sun from 10 am to 3 pm (weekdays) and Read more

Honduran Music at its Best

If you are trying to get yourself infused with the feel of life in Honduras, whether in preparation for a trip or a move, you should definitely take a dive into the sounds of Honduran music. One of the most popular and talented singers and performers in Honduras is Guillermo Anderson. He produces some amazing stuff and is worth a listen, even if you just want something new for your iPod playlist.

You can read up on what Guillermo is doing, get tour dates, and check out his CDs lyrics on his official website. He really does a bit of everything; he even has a record just for kids! (Para los Chiquititos). His newest album, Mujer Canción, Canción Read more

Relocate to Honduras

Villa Elena is an exclusive community resting just outside the capital city of Tegucigalpa, and it is the perfect place to settle if you are looking for something with all the beauty of Central America, but all the amenities of the first world.

Villa Elena has worked to integrate their facilities into the natural landscape of the extensive forest that surrounds their grounds. They offer a number of different model houses constructed on the grounds that are built to mimic the modern life to which most foreigners are accustomed.

At about 4,500 feet above sea level the temperature is comfortable, allowing you to enjoy the private country club and ecological park year round. Within Read more

Exploring La Ceiba

On the north Caribbean coast of Honduras, the city of La Ceiba has long been a jumping point for those traveling into the exquisite Bay Islands and the adjacent Hog Islands. However, the area in and around La Ceiba has much to offer tourists, and in recent years its infrastructure has been changing to support more visiting westerners.

The Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge is a modern park that has small displays, but is really quite beautiful. Getting there is half the fun! First, you take an old train through pineapple fields to a beautiful lagoon. From there you can take a tour of the lagoon in either a motor boat or a canoe. This is a great Read more

Relaxing on Roatan

Out of the Blue on the West Bay of Roatan Island is the perfect place to kick back and relax. It may not be the fanciest of places, but Snokey, the manager, and Marlon, her assistant, make this the most enjoyable of stays, and they even speak decent English! With the beach in one direction, and a whole slew of bars and restaurants in the other, you can’t go wrong.

The kitchen is stocked with all the necessary cooking tools, and it, along with the barbeque, invites you to do some cooking of your own. The Mini Mart stocks the basics, and if they don’t have what you need, they’ll help you find it. Free internet and Read more

The Highlands of Honduras

Just northeast of the city of Tegucigalpa you will find La Tigra National Park. Sprawled out of 92 square miles of the Central Highlands of Honduras, this rugged playground is home to breathtaking views from the tops of high mountains, spectacular waterfalls, rivers and extensive stretches of dry pine forests.

There are eight different well-kept trails that run up through the mountains. It is important to stay on these trails, as there are many unmarked mining shafts left over from the region’s mining days. On the lower slopes of the park lies the ghost town of El Rosario, once a bustling mining community, now left for the birds, quite literally! The park is home to over 350 species Read more

A Slice of Heaven

The best pizza in Honduras, dare I say the best pizza in all of Central America, is found at Weekend’s Pizza in Santa Rosa de Copan. Honduras is not particularly famous for its cuisine; at the center of virtually every meal is a heaping pile of white rice, accompanied by a side of beans. It makes sense then, that Weekend’s Pizza is the product of, not a local, but a former Peace Corps volunteer. The Gringo thinks he missed good pizza so much, he decided to open his own restaurant. And thank heaven he did!

Weekend’s Pizza not only makes their own high quality dough, their special pizza sauce is divine in its own right. Order the Italiano, Read more

Loco For Futbol

If you’re crazy for fútbol, then you can’t pass up the chance to see one of the 10 national teams compete while visiting Honduras. Despite the fact that many of the country’s top players head off to Europe, the league is still super competitive, the games are high energy and the crowds are crazy!

San Pedro, Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba all have stadiums where the national teams compete. Just ask at your hotel front desk and they will be able to direct you to the stadium. Crowds can get pretty intense, so if possible get a seat near the door. If you want to play, just keep a look out for any open fields or schools; there Read more
