National Park in Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa’s National Park is Parque Naciones Unidas El Picacho (United Nations Park El Picacho) , which is located on the north side of the city,Elpicacho cristo honduras about 6 km from the center of town. It is where the large statue of Christ that overlooks the city is located, and offers an excellent view of the city, in particular from the foot of the statue. The National Park is open from 8 am to 5 pm and entrance costs US $1 for adults and $0.50 for children.

Within the park there are several gardens: a Confucian garden, which was donated by the Taiwan government, a United Nations garden, and the national zoo.

The zoo is open Wed-Sun from 10 am to 3 pm (weekdays) and 4 on the weekends.(Adult US $0.25, Child US $0.10). Animals include native Honduran birds, mammals, and reptiles. There is a taxidermy display of monkeys and birds, including the king vulture.

There is also a soccer field located within the park; games are held there on Sundays. A small comedor serves typical Honduran food.

The road to El Picacho winds up through some of the best real estate in the city. To get there during the week you can take the El Hatillo bus which runs every 25 minutes from 5 am to 10 pm, with the last return bus being at 9 pm. You get the bus at the corner of Calle Finlay and Calle Cristobal Colon, one block south of Parque Finlay across the street from Hotel Granada downtown. Get off at the junction to the park, and be prepared to walk your way to the entrance. On Sundays buses go directly to the park gates from behind Iglesia Los Dolores.
