Does Honduas Prefer Obama or McCain for US President?

The debate of who should be the next United States president is a hot one wherever you travel to and Honduras is no exception, even if the Gallup Poll taken doesn’t reflect it.

From May to September 2008 Gallup Polls conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States.Pan6(a)

The poll claims that 64% of Hondurans do not know or would not answer who would make the better U.S. president as far as Honduras is concerned, Obama or McCain. Twenty-seven percent support Obama and only 9% are for McCain.

This Gringo thinks that these results don’t reflect the true feelings of most Hondurans, and that they especially don’t reflect the feelings of expats living in Honduras.

Many old-school Hondurans do not support Obama because of his view on partial-birth abortion. being an extremely Catholic and overall religious country, feelings on the wrongness of abortion run strong in Honduras.

Many others, however, believe that Obama’s diplomatic nature and policy are just what the United States need, and just what will open doors for a better relationship between Honduras and the United States.

As far as Honduras as an growing expat community is concerned, either McCain or Obama taking office could have it’s positive and negative outcomes. Obama’s tax reforms plans may mean the well-to-do have less to spend on vacationing or investing in Honduras, but it might also make it possible for more middle-of-the-road income families to take more frequent vacations to Honduras, increasing the wear and tear on the country’s tourism industry.

What do you think? If you are an expat in Honduras, or a Honduran living in America, who would you prefer to see elected into office and why? Is Obama better for Honduras or is McCain?
