In getting yourself set up to live in Honduras, banking invariably becomes an issue. All banks offer accounts in both U.S. dollars and Honduran Lempiras, and it is best to maintain accounts in both currencies.
The best way to avoid excessive bank transfer fees is by writing a check to yourself from your U.S. account and depositing it into your Honduran dollars account. The only downside on this is that the money will not be available for at least 3 weeks, maybe more, so you
have to plan ahead.
Make sure before opening an account that you fully investigate what services the bank offers, including online banking, paying of utilities and bills online, direct deposit or withdrawal and other “standard” services.
If you bank online, make sure you print receipts of transfers to avoid any confusion. Get and ATM debit card, as they are being accepted at more and more locations, and are so much easier (and safer) than a stack of cash.

At this time many banks in Honduras will not open a account for non-residents. Getting residency in Honduras can be very difficult and require quite a bit of bribery for anything to be done.
