Getting the Senior Discount

Honduras is a pretty sweet place to retire, made even sweeter by the Tercera Edad (literally third age) law. This law, which can be seen in full at the Global Legal Information Network, states that residents of Honduras over the age of 65 are eligible to receive discounts on a wide variety of goods and services. The law was put into place to help seniors who are living on limited incomes make the purchases they need.Hon4

Discounts are available for medical services, including hospitalization, prescriptions, and over the counter medicine. Transportation discounts apply for air, land and sea travel. Restaurants and hotels also offer discounts, with some precursors being attached by the law. Telephone, water and electricity bills are also included, as are concerts, movies, and sporting events.

In most places the discount is not given automatically, you have to ask, and maybe even argue a little bit for it to be honored. Remember, it is the law; they are required to give it to you. Make sure you have your residency card or driver’s license handy, as oftentimes you have to prove your age.
