Exploring La Ceiba

On the north Caribbean coast of Honduras, the city of La Ceiba has long been a jumping point for those traveling into the exquisite Bay Islands and the adjacent Hog Islands. However, the area in and around La Ceiba has much to offer tourists, and in recent years its infrastructure has been changing to support more visiting westerners.

The Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge is a modern park that has small displays, but is really quite beautiful. Getting there is halfHon3Image the fun! First, you take an old train through pineapple fields to a beautiful lagoon. From there you can take a tour of the lagoon in either a motor boat or a canoe. This is a great place for the whole family to enjoy.

The Lodge at the Pico Bonito National Park is open to day visitors and has a pool, trails for hiking, lookout tours, and an excellent restaurant. Another place to see in La Ceiba is the beach at El Porvenir, where you can go tubing in the river that dumps out into the sea. There is also a small restaurant where you can get drinks and other picadillos (fingerfoods); this is a favorite of the Honduras Gringo.
