Private island spa…. what could be better?

The only place on Roatan that serves as a full service spa, as well as launching point for snorkeling and diving excursions is the Santé Wellness Center, Day Spa and Wellness Retreat. This is one of my favorite places to relax when in Honduras.

The Wellness Center is located on a private cay, across the way from the Parrot Tree Plantation Marina. A private boat owned and operated by the spa picks you up and whisks you across the bay, where you will be pampered like a star. It’s basically the makings of a dream vacation: massage therapy, yoga, and meditation on a private island in the Caribbean with some of the best snorkeling Read more

Helpful by Nature

Hondurans are some of the friendliest people on the plant, and they are always trying to help. That said, it is important to be careful when trying to find travel and other important information. Why? Simple. Hondurans do not want to disappoint.

This basically means that rather than tell you that they don’t know, a Honduran will come up with an answer that might not be correct. It is not out of mal intent; they simply want to please you by providing you with the needed response. Solution: Make sure you ask someone who is likely to know the answer – a hotel concierge, a taxi driver, or a travel agency.

By asking those who know, you Read more

Getting the Senior Discount

Honduras is a pretty sweet place to retire, made even sweeter by the Tercera Edad (literally third age) law. This law, which can be seen in full at the Global Legal Information Network, states that residents of Honduras over the age of 65 are eligible to receive discounts on a wide variety of goods and services. The law was put into place to help seniors who are living on limited incomes make the purchases they need.

Discounts are available for medical services, including hospitalization, prescriptions, and over the counter medicine. Transportation discounts apply for air, land and sea travel. Restaurants and hotels also offer discounts, with some precursors being attached by the law. Telephone, water and electricity Read more

Exploring La Ceiba

On the north Caribbean coast of Honduras, the city of La Ceiba has long been a jumping point for those traveling into the exquisite Bay Islands and the adjacent Hog Islands. However, the area in and around La Ceiba has much to offer tourists, and in recent years its infrastructure has been changing to support more visiting westerners.

The Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge is a modern park that has small displays, but is really quite beautiful. Getting there is half the fun! First, you take an old train through pineapple fields to a beautiful lagoon. From there you can take a tour of the lagoon in either a motor boat or a canoe. This is a great Read more

What's all the hype about?

What is it exactly that is drawing more and more gringos to Honduras? It’s hard to say exactly, but this Gringo thinks it’s more than just the beautiful beaches and practically untouched natural settings. It may be the fact that Honduras is manageable; most of the highlights of the country can be seen during a two week vacation. In addition, Honduras is inexpensive. Even in touristy areas prices are far more reasonable than in other Central American countries.

Since it is not as high-profile as its neighbors, Honduras offers a charm that comes with the rawness of undiscovered terrain and untouched pueblos. Its national parks are still pure, and eco-tourism is on the rise. The parks offer great Read more

A Tree House for the Big Kids

Treetanic is one of the coolest bars in all of Honduras. Located in Utila, at the Jade Seahorse Inn RESTAURANT, this elevated wooden deck sits under the shade of a large mango tree. Built to resemble an old ship, Treetanic is the ultimate tree fort for grown-ups.

The dcor is insane; the tables are made out of marbles, everything is done in bright colors, and even the bathrooms are a piece of artwork!. At the main bar you can mix and mingle while enjoying the music or you can escape down to one of the sub-levels for an intimate moment with your date. Although there is always a breeze, things can get pretty hot, so dress accordingly.

Honduran Spanish

Hondurans appreciate it when you do your best to speak a little Spanish, no matter how limited your language skills are. Greetings pretty much always start with buenos días (good day) or buenas tardes (good afternoon), using the first up until noon, and then switching over to the latter. Buenas noches (good evening) is used after dark and generally signifies good night, as in good-bye. When in doubt, simply say buenas, it is an acceptable greeting for any time of day.

Say mucho gusto when you are meeting someone for the first time, or when you can’t remember if you have met before. It means nice to meat you, or nice to see you again. One interesting saying is Read more
